25th Anniversary week: How a German tour operator got to know a one-of-a-kind adventure

Michael Browning and Craig Matthews

A lot of people visited Birdsafari a/s during the ”Gjesværstappan Nature Reserve 25th Anniversary Week.” As usual, people from many corners of the world. Birdsafari.com talked with four of those visitors, Elena Blinova from Russia, Michael Browning and Craig Matthews from Down Under. And finally, Dietmar Trüger - a regular bird safari guest - from Germany with an interesting story.

Elena Blinova and Atle Hansen

Tourtrans Voyage of Russia had their first  bird safari on June 17th. BirdSafari a/s equipped tour leader Elena Blinova with a list a birds in Russian. She guided the group of 44 Russian travelers with the aid of crew member Atle Hansen. The Russians were very satisfied,”очень хорошо,” and Elena is hoping to do two – three more bird safaris this summer.

Michael Browning
and Craig Matthews (Australia) took the local morning bus from Honningsvåg and went on the same departure as the Russian group. After the bird safari they said that they saw a lot more wildlife and close-up than expected. ”Diverse wildlife – so many different birds.” Michael and Craig were also thankful for the crew member that translated what the Russian guide was saying on the loudspeakers for them.

Dietmar Trüger of Studiosus, Germany, is a long time fan of bird safari. ”However, it was a coincidence that we started to include bird safari in our program at Nordkapp”, he says.

Almost a decade ago the boat we were supposed to travel with from Havøysund to Honningsvåg had to cancel. I found Ola (editor: the owner of BirdSafari a/s) and he came and picked us up. We sailed with MS Havsula to Gjesvær where he let us off. After returning to Gjesvær from the Nordkapp plateau, Ola offered to show us the birds at Gjesværstappan Nature Reserve. After that I have always taken my groups to BirdSafari.

It is a one-of-a-kind nature experience: To watch all the birds in the Arctic Ocean. A place for solitude and meditation. It is a shame that some are discourage from spending money on the bird safari because of all the fees at Nordkapp. The fee to use the underwater tunnel and the fee for entering the Nordkapp plateau.

Dietmar is cut short at this time, the group he has with him this time has to move on. ”Now, we take our groups to the plateau during the day in order to avoid the crowd at midnight,” he says, as he enters the bus and leaves.
