An important circumpolar tourism seminar in Gjesvær The steering committee for the circumpolar academic tourist network: (Left to Right) Hans Gelter (Luleå University of Technology); Ola Sletvold (Finnmark University College); Jarkko Saarinen (University of Oulu); Arvid Viken (Finnmark University College); Dieter Müller (Umeå University); Patrick Maher (University of Northern British Columbia); Outi Rantala (University of Lapland); Gunnar Thór Jóhannesson (University of Iceland); and Margaret Johnston (Lakehead University). The committee had a seminar in Gjesvær 23 – 25. May 2008. The purpose of the seminar was to establish an academic network for education and research in the field of arctic tourism. Ola Sletvold of Finnmark University College says they also initiated the work with creating a Masters program in northern tourism. The next objective is to find governmental funding for continuing the work. The seminar included bird safari, Nordkapp dining at Terrassen restaurant and a visit to the Nordkapp plateau. Sletvold and his group did not give their highest rating to the new and under training crew at BirdSafari a/s. However, they were very satisfied with the exquisite and “outdoorsy” dining hosted by Elena and Roald Berg.
